SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's capital city will remain at an "orange" risk level for COVID-19, Mayor Erin Mendenhall's office told FOX 13.

"After consulting with the County Health Department we've requested to keep Salt Lake City in the orange phase because our data is not showing a significant enough change since May 1 to warrant a shift to yellow. We will continue to cooperate closely with the state and local health departments to monitor the data and evaluate our status," a spokesperson for the mayor said.

Salt Lake City has some of the highest case numbers for COVID-19 in the state, according to data from Salt Lake County's Health Department.

The mayor had raised the possibility earlier this week that Salt Lake City might move to a yellow status on the state's color-coded risk scale. Public health orders are set to expire on Friday, though Governor Gary Herbert issued a new one on Wednesday night.
