NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — North Little Rock Police say a boy is dead after a shooting at Shorter Gardens Apartments Thursday morning.

Police say they received a call just before 10:20 a.m. that someone had been shot at the apartments on 800 N. Beech Street.

Officers say they found the boy dead inside an apartment located in building 8.

Police haven’t released the boy’s name or age.

Neighbors like Akemma McCree say the boy’s loss is being felt across the community.

“I know guns spell one thing and that’s trouble,” McCree said. “I pray for the child and I pray for that family. He was a nice kid, real nice kid.”

McCree, who lost his 18-year-old brother to gun violence two years ago, says now more than ever the community should come together.

“Acting out in violence and destroying stuff is not acceptable, and it’s not going to bring that child back it’s not going to make the situation better,” McCree said. “But we can do, we all can uplift one another. We can all take the time out to make something positive happen in the community.”

Neighbors like Veronica Dokes agreed.

“Anything we can do to help keep these babies safe we need to start on it right now,” she said. “We can work a little bit hard and trying to talk with them, rap with them, and have some sessions.”

As a mom of three boys, Dokes said she wants the family to know, they’re in her prayers.

“It just brought chills to my heart to see one of our children gone on unnecessarily,” Dokes added. “I don’t know the baby, but I don’t have to know him to know and feel what his parents feel.”

North Little Rock Police are investigating.
