Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said Wednesday that the city plans to hire 300 police officers over the next year.

In making his pitch to Detroiters to join the police force, Duggan also took a moment to talk about what he considered another serious threat to Americans: racism. Hiring a police force that represents the people they protect, he suggested, will help.

Duggan pointed to three recent incidents: the deaths of two black men, Ahmaud Arbery, 25, in Georgia, and George Floyd, 46, in Minnesota, and threats against a black man in New York's Central Park.

"If these stories don't break your heart, you're not human," he said. "And for anyone who thinks there is not a racial problem in this country, think about the way black men are being treated in very different parts of the country."
