Phi Kappa Phi Inductees

Multiple students from Northeast Alabama recently were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines, at Jacksonville State University.

Jessica Allen and Jamie Thomas of Piedmont, Shauni Barrier of Attalla, Paxton Crow of Fort Payne, Gina Mabrey and Savannah Perman of Southside, Eric McGahee of Altoona and Marista Oliver-Graves of Sardis City are among about 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year.

Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

GSCC students inducted into Phi Theta Kappa

The Rho Rho Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Gadsden State Community College recently inducted new members into the honor society.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest and most prestigious honor society for students at two-year colleges, with more than 1,200 chapters on campuses across the United States and internationally.

Honors Lists Selections

• Lauren Brinley of Albertville, Noe Guevara and Brynley Hyatt of Geraldine, Joana Medina Vega of Guntersville and Clark Oliphant of Centre were named to the Spring 2020 Dean’s List at Berea College in Berea, Kentucky. A student is named to the Dean’s List who achieves a GPA of 3.4 or higher while passing at least four total credits, a course load equivalent to 16 semester hours.

• Eric Burgess of Centre was named to the Spring 2020 President’s List and Shayna Otinger to the Dean’s List at Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia. Burgess is a music performance major and Otinger is a communications major. The President’s List recognizes students who have achieved a semester grade point average of at least 3.80 GPA and the Dean’s List honors those with at least a 3.60 GPA (on a 4.00 scale) in at least 12 semester credit hours.

• Colby Watson of Guntersville was named to the Spring 2020 Chancellor’s Honor Roll at the University of Mississippi. The designation honors students who earn a semester GPA of 3.75 to 4.00 in at least 12 graded hours for the semester.

Jacksonville State graduated its largest class in university history — 895 — in Spring 2020. Because of COVID-19, commencement has been postponed to Aug. 1.
