Southside wins 2 games behind 8 home runs

ORANGE BEACH — Southside won two games behind eight home runs in the Gulf Coast Classic II on Monday at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.

The Panthers (12-9) beat Guntersville 15-11 and eased past Pleasant Valley 12-2.

Sam Raines totaled two home runs while Brennan Stokes, Micah Phillips, Connor Johnson, Jacob Little, Brock Ford and Toren Snow all added one home run.

The Panthers continue tournament play against Lexington and Sheffield on Tuesday.

Sardis earns 2 wins

OXFORD — Sardis beat Wellborn 11-5 and Saks 9-6 Monday in the Spring Experience tournament at Choccolocco Park.

Trey Hubbard and Wyatt Samples each had two hits and two RBI for the Lions (8-5) in the win over Wellborn. Luke Morris added two hits. Justin Golden earned the win in five innings. He gave up six hits, four runs (one earned), struck out eight and walked three. Jackson Greer tossed the final two innings.

In the Saks win, the Lions scored six runs in the fifth to regain the lead. Hubbard had three hits and three RBI. Reece Lee tallied two hits and two RBI. Braxton Brooks and Brody Samples each had two hits and one RBI. Morris added two hits. Samples earned the win in five innings. He gave up eight hits, five runs (four earned), fanned six and walked two. Morris pitched in relief.

Sardis plays Munford at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Choccolocco Park.

Coosa Christian finishes second in tournament

BIRMINGHAM — Coosa Christian defeated Carver 14-2 on Monday but fell to Parker in the championship of the 11th annual William "Cap" Brown Southwest Hitaway Spring Break Tournament at Parker High School in Birmingham.

In the win over Carver, Masaki Nakamura recorded 12 strikeouts while only giving up two hits. Nakamura also drove in two runs himself on a pair of singles.

Karter Roberts had three hits and three RBIs, while Noah Davidson and Camren Vernon drove in two runs each, and Chase Burger scored three times.

In the championship game against Parker, Coosa fell 4-3 to claim second place.

Hokes Bluff 12, Muscle Shoals 2

OXFORD — Class 4A, No. 1 Hokes Bluff eased past Muscle Shoals in six innings Monday in the Spring Experience tournament at Choccolocco Park.

The Eagles (11-2) scored one run in the first, six in the second and five in the sixth to get the win.

Drake Rainey had two hits and five RBI for Hokes Bluff. Carson Eubanks added two hits. Payton Lemons had two hits and one RBI. Dylan Teague, Houston Edwards and Hunter Burke all had one hit and one RBI.

Lemons tossed a complete game and gave up five hits, two runs, walked three and struck out six.

Hokes Bluff plays Central-Phenix City at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Choccolocco Park.

Etowah goes 1-1 in 1st day of tourney

5A, No. 2 Etowah beat Richmond Burton (Ill.) 7-6 before falling to Oak Mountain 3-2 in nine innings Monday in the Gulf Coast Classic II.

The Blue Devils (16-6) scored five runs in the fifth inning to beat Richmond. Will Hotalen had two hits and three RBI. Will Noles added two hits and two RBI. Austin Young tallied two hits while Jarren Wright finished with one hit and one RBI. Britain Nance earned the win in relief, as Tyler Bush was the starting pitcher.

In the loss, Young, Hotalen, De’Rickey Wright and Hunter Cox each had one hit. Daniel Sieber added one RBI.

Hickman (Mo.) 9, Westbrook 6

OXFORD — Class 2A, No. 8 Westbrook Christian fell in nine innings Monday to Hickman High School out of Missouri at Choccolocco Park in the Spring Experience tournament.

The Warriors (10-6) scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Greysen Robinson’s single and John Ross Morgan’s double each scored a run. Hickman scored four runs in the top of the ninth to secure the win.

Morgan led Westbrook with three hits and added one RBI. Isaac James totaled two hits and one RBI.

Westbrook plays Muscle Shoals at 11 a.m. and White Plains at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Choccolocco Park.

SOFTBALL

Southside goes 1-1 on 1st day of tourney

GULF SHORES — Class 5A, No. 10 Southside beat Dothan 8-7 after falling to Oakland (Tenn.) 4-3 in the Gulf Coast Classic III at the Gulf Shores Sports Complex on Monday.

Lynnsey Hunt scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning to give the Panthers (14-10) the win. Alexis Rennhack had two hits and two RBI. Hunt added two hits. Macie Herren totaled one hit and two RBI. Carly Lankford, Sydney Yancey and Kaylee Brown all had one hit and one RBI. Rennhack earned the win in relief.

Brown led Southside at the plate with two hits and two RBI in the loss to Oakland. Hunt had one hit and one RBI. Herren, Yancey, Rylee Gattis and Austyn Patterson each totaled one hit.

Southside continues tournament play at 8 a.m. Tuesday against Houston County. Then the Panthers play Westmoreland (Tenn.) at 11:30 a.m.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL

Etowah beats Sardis, loses to Southside

ATTALLA — Etowah defeated Sardis 4-3 and lost to Southside 6-5 Saturday.

Caleb Freeman earned the win over Sardis in four innings. He gave up one hit, one earned run and struck out 12. Trace Thompson tossed the last inning to get the save.

Andrew Pierce had a double for the Blue Devils. Freeman added one hit and one RBI. Briggs Freeman and Thompson both had one hit each.

In the loss, Pierce pitched four innings while giving up five runs and striking out four. Braden Boatwright tossed one inning in relief and struck out two. Pierce had one hit and two RBI. Freeman, Thompson and Thad Pearce all added one hit.
