Southside's Bothwell inks football scholarship

SOUTHSIDE — Southside's Kenneth Bothwell signed a football scholarship with Fort Scott Community College in a ceremony held Wednesday at the school.

Bothwell in 2018 helped lead the Panthers to a playoff spot for the first time since 2014. Southside reached the second round of the postseason after starting the season 1-4.

For his senior season, Bothwell rushed for 1,387 yards and 21 touchdowns and caught 16 passes for 508 yards and five more scores.

Bothwell was named to The Times' All-Etowah County football team and was a second-team choice in Class 5A on the ASWA All-State team.

BASEBALL

Coosa Christian 7, Donoho 6

Coosa Christian picked up a Class 1A, Area 11 victory over Donoho 7-6 Wednesday.

Masaki Nakamura pitched six innings to get the win and Connor Belyeu relieved him in the seventh for the save.

Chase Burger drove in the winning run in the sixth with a double. He totaled three hits and four RBI. Connor Belyeu, Karter Roberts, and Reece Myrick each scored twice in the victory.

SOFTBALL

Sardis 9, Crossville 4

SARDIS CITY — Sardis defeated Class 5A, Area 13 foe Crossville 9-4 in high school softball Tuesday.

Lily Towns had two hits and two RBI for Sardis. Emily Cook finished with two hits, including a double, and one RBI. Hailey Hill, Adelyn Ellis and Harlee Vincent each collected two hits. Jaylyn Minshew tallied one hit and three RBI. Jade Bonds tallied a double and two RBI.

Kayden Tarvin got the win in circle, tossing all seven innings while allowing two earned runs and two walks while fanning nine.

GOLF

Hokes Bluff tops Etowah

Hokes Bluff edged Etowah in boys high school golf at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Silver Lakes on Tuesday.

The Eagles carded a 176 to the Blue Devils’ 181.

Low medalist: Matthew Jones (H) 40

Other low scores: Tucker Marsh (H) 41; Alex Argo (E) 42; Eli Antisdel (E) 42; Josh Jones (H) 43; Dakota Stiles (E) 45.

In girls play, Hokes Bluff posted a 175 while the Blue Devils had two individuals competing.

Low medalist: Miranda Nassif (E) 48.

Other low scores: Ashley Bigelow (H) 55; Sydney Cornell (E) 55; Katie Marsh (H) 57; Kaitlyn McGatha (H) 63.

TENNIS

Southside splits with Boaz

Southside split with Boaz in high school tennis Tuesday.

The Panther boys (10-4, 5-1) won 7-2 while the Southside girls lost 7-2.

Getting wins for the Panther boys were Colton Dugger, Hudson Hopper, Hayden Davis and Ben Deike, as well as doubles wins from Dugger/Hopper, Davis/Deike and Jackson Opdycke/Dylan Winningham.

The Southside girls got victories from Alex Dugger and Zoee Sitz.

The Panthers host Guntersville in Gadsden on Tuesday.
