Cole, Partridge win Gadsden Area tourney

Glencoe girls, Southside boys finish atop team standings

The Gadsden Area Golf Tournament hosted by the Gadsden Junior Golf Association at Twin Bridges Golf Club was held Thursday.

Glencoe’s Lauren Cole finished first individually on the girls side while Gadsden City’s Will Partridge was the low medalist for the boys.

Cole’s 80 helped Glencoe finish first out of five teams. Camryn Blackwell shot a 96 while Asia Dennis finished with a 101 to bring the Yellow Jackets’ team total to 277.

Partridge shot a 72 for the Titans, who finished second in the team standings with a 302. Southside won first place out of eight teams in the boys team standings with 300.

Devon Downs led the Panthers with a 73. Michael Rich (74), Brock Lawley (76), Tommy Simmons (77) and Xander Jolley (81) rounded out the field for the Panthers.

Joining Partridge for Gadsden City were Carter Cooper (73), Barnes Stacey (76), James Amberson (81) and Seth Womack (88).

Glencoe’s Brock McNeely (73) finished second individually after a scorecard tiebreaker. The tiebreaker started at the 18th hole and No. 16 ended up being the difference.

Westbrook girls finished in second place and Lauren Weaver finished second individually with an 86. Kate Bowman (100), Anna Nichols (102) and Emalee Watts (111) rounded out play for the Warriors.

Glencoe 11, Gadsden City 0

Emma Hyfield totaled four hits in Glencoe’s six-inning win over Gadsden City on Thursday.

Hyfield was 4-for-4 with one RBI. Hylan Higdon and Kayla Traylor both had one hit and two RBI. Jaxson Sizemore had two hits and three RBI. Madalin Gorham and Noni Bethel each tallied one hit and one RBI.

Higdon tossed a complete game. She gave up three hits, struck out seven and walked one.

White Plains 4, Hokes Bluff 0

Hokes Bluff was shut out 4-0 by White Plains on Thursday.

Bailee Latronico had two hits for the Eagles. Mackenzie Coffelt added one hit.

BOYS SOCCER

Southside 7, Sylvania 1

SOUTHSIDE — Southside defeated Sylvania 7-1 Thursday on senior night at Barney Hood Stadium.

Isaac Franklin and Carlos Herrera each scored three goals. Koen De Hullu scored one goal in the win. Franklin also had two assists. Jaren Greene had six saves, including a diving save on a penalty kick.

Southside (15-1-1) hosts Leeds on April 26 at 6 pm in the first round of the playoff at Barney Hood Stadium.

GIRLS ATHLETICS

Glencoe’s Cole named 3A, Region 6 Bryant Jordan Scholar Athlete

Glencoe’s Lauren Cole recently was named the Class 3A, Region 6 Bryant Jordan Scholar Athlete.

Each of the 104 regional winners won a $3,000 scholarship.

Cole, a senior, is a three-sport athlete for the Yellow Jackets. She led the volleyball team to the state tournament, basketball to the Northeast Regional finals and currently is nearing the end of high school golf season.
