Roundup: Glencoe softball opens area play with 20-0 win

BLOUNTSVILLE — Glencoe softball opened up Class 3A, Area 12 play with an offensive explosion Monday.

The Yellow Jackets defeated J.B. Pennington 20-0 after scoring 14 runs in the fifth inning.

Glencoe improved to 2-0 overall and has outscored its opponents 34-0.

Abi Bunt was 4-for-5 with five RBIs for Glencoe. Caroline Phillips had three hits and two RBIs. Kayla Traylor added three hits and one RBI. Anna Claire Hipps tallied two hits and three RBIs. Kaylee Higdon and Jaxson Sizemore both had one hit and two RBIs. Summer Crump totaled two hits while Autumn Crump added one RBI.

Hylan Higdon picked up the complete-game win. She allowed only one hit and struck out nine.

White Plains 8, Etowah 0

ATTALLA — Etowah was held scoreless against White Plains on Monday.

The Blue Devils (2-2-1) totaled six hits but had four errors.

Shelby Horton led Etowah with two hits. Hally Bennett, Abbi Martin, Jaleigh DeVine and Kacie Byrd each had one hit.

Katlyn Roberts took the loss in the circle. She gave up seven hits, two runs and struck out one. Kacie Byrd pitched four innings in relief. She allowed three hits, six runs (two earned), fanned one and walked two.

Boaz 5, New Hope 2

Boaz grabbed an early lead and maintained it the remainder of the way against New Hope.

The Pirates scored two runs in the top of the first, two in the fifth and added their last run in the sixth.

Gracie Duncan had three hits for Boaz. Taylor Rutledge added two hits and four RBIs. Sydney Noles tallied one hit and one RBI. Emmorie Burke, Jaiden Camper and Raegan Smith each totaled one hit.

BASEBALL

West End 14, Gaston 1 (5 innings)

West End scored early and often in its win over Etowah County rival Gaston on Monday.

Eli Pearce led the Patriots with three hits and six RBIs. Ty Taylor picked up the win on the mound. He went four innings, gave up two hits, one run, struck out four and walked one. Tyler Jones tossed the final inning in relief.

The Bulldogs committed eight errors. Brady Underwood, Josh Campbell and Dixon Morris had the three lone hits for Gaston.

Westbrook 7, Sardis 2

SARDIS CITY — Will Noles pitched Westbrook Christian past Sardis on the road Monday.

Noles went 5.2 innings and was perfect through five before giving up one hit, one run and walking two in the sixth inning. Brett Vice recorded the save.

Isaac James had two hits and three RBI for the Warriors (6-4). Andrew Lockridge had two hits and two runs scored. Andrew Dutton and Cole Patterson each had a double. Noles added one hit.

Brody Samples took the loss for Sardis (2-6). He allowed five runs in two innings. Jackson Burns and Chase Williams had the lone two hits for the Lions.

The two teams meet again at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, this time at Westbrook in Rainbow City.

Glencoe 13, Ashville 1 (6 innings)

ASHVILLE — Glencoe scored 13 runs on three hits on the road against Ashville on Monday.

How? Because the Yellow Jackets (6-4) drew 15 walks.

Carson Naylor had one hit and three RBIs for Glencoe. Colby Lancaster and Noah Fairley each had one hit and one RBI.

Fairley earned the win in four innings. He gave up three hits, one run, struck out four and walked one.

Glencoe hosts Gaston at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Etowah 14, St. Clair County 8

ODENVILLE — Coming off two losses Saturday, Etowah’s bats exploded Monday on the road at St. Clair County.

The Blue Devils had five batters total two hits each — Hunter Simmons, Caleb Smith, Hunter Cox, Caleb Burns and Braxtin Goodnight. Burns and Cox both had two RBIs while Simmons and Smith each had one RBI. Caleb Freeman and Jon Washburn had one hit and one RBI apiece.

Washburn earned the win in 4.1 innings. He gave up eight hits, six runs (three earned), struck out three and walked one. Trace Thompson and Burns each pitched in relief.

Spring Garden 3, Hokes Bluff 2

HOKES BLUFF — Hokes Bluff totaled 10 hits while holding Spring Garden to three hits, but still fell at home Monday.

The Eagles (4-4) left nine runners stranded on base.

Payton Lemons, Clay Rainey and Ashton Gulledge all had two hits each. Caleb McGinnis finished with one hit and one RBI. Hunter Burke, Koby Addison and Drake Rainey each had one hit.

Drake Rainey took the loss for Hokes Bluff. He went five innings, gave up three hits, three runs (two earned), struck out nine and walked two. Mason Brown tossed the final two innings in relief. He didn’t allow a hit and fanned three.

Hokes Bluff hosts Glencoe at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

BOYS SOCCER

Glencoe 3, Faith Christian 2

GLENCOE — Aiden Cornutt scored two goals to help Glencoe improve to 2-2 overall Monday.

Cornutt added an assist.

Lance Cochran scored one goal. Jackson Williams tallied an assist. Gavin Bray had multiple saves in goal.

Glencoe plays Weaver at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
