PREP SPORTS: Gadsden City baseball picks up 10th win

GADSDEN — Gadsden City jumped out to an 8-0 after the fourth inning and cruised the rest of the way to match the number of wins the Titans had all season last year with the 9-1 victory over Albertville on Saturday.

J.J. Gray led Gadsden City (10-4) at the plate with two hits and two RBIs. Daylon Philpot and Austin Brewer added two hits and a RBI each.

Lucas Minton picked up the win on the mound for the Titans after four innings of work. He allowed four hits and a walk, while striking out two.

Cole Smedley led the Aggies (8-6) at the plate with two hits and a RBI.

Gadsden City 8, Albertville 3

GADSDEN — Gadsden City scored six runs in the bottom of the second and cruised the rest of the way to earn the win over Albertville in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

The Titans scattered 11 hits and limited the Aggies to five.

Austin Brewer led Gadsden City at the plate with two hits and two RBIs. J.J. Gray, Sam Day and Cory Cline chipped in two hits each.

Gray also picked up the win on the mound after five innings of work. He allowed three hits and one walk, while striking out four.

Brendan Merrell had two hits and two RBIs for Albertville.

Alexandria 2, Westbrook 0

ALEXANDRIA — Alexandria pitcher Landon Comer threw a six-hit shutout over Westbrook Christian on Saturday. Comer didn’t allow a walk, but did strike out eight.

On the other side of the pitcher’s duel, Andrew Dutton allowed five hits, two earned runs and three walks, while striking out two for Westbrook.

Layton Ellison had two hits for Alexandria, while Joseph Gilchrist had two hits for the Warriors.

Westbrook 8, Russellville 0

ALEXANDRIA — LSU commit Samuel Dutton threw a two-hit shutout on Saturday. Dutton allowed three walks, but struck out 12 Russellville batters.

Brett Vice was the lone Westbrook player with more than one hit. Vice had two hits and two runs scored.

Westbrook (7-5) was walked 13 times during the game.

West End 8, Sand Rock 0

WALNUT GROVE — West End starting pitcher Ty Taylor threw a two-hit shutout to lift the Patriots to the victory on Saturday.

Taylor allowed two hits and one walk, while striking out six.

Eli Pearce led West End (6-4) at the plate with three hits, including a double and three RBIs.

Brady Jackson and Derrick Clanton accounted for Sand Rock’s two hits.

SOFTBALL

Sardis 3, West Point 2

SARDIS CITY — Sardis scored three runs on three hits in the first inning and held off West Point on Saturday.

Adelyn Ellis led the Lions with two hits and a RBI, while Jade Bonds added a hit.

Carlie Wilkins of West Point kept Sardis’ bats at bay most of the afternoon. She allowed three hits, three earned runs and three walks, while striking out 12.

Kayden Tarvin picked up the win on the mound for the Lions. She allowed four hits, two earned runs and a walk, while striking out four.

Sylvania 2, Sardis 0

SARDIS CITY — Sylvania scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and managed to hold off Sardis (2-2), which was limited to six hits.

Lily Towns, Val Owens, Jaylyn Minshew, Adelyn Ellis, Jade Bonds and Hailey Hill had a hit each for the Lions.

Southside 14, Etowah 3

SOUTHSIDE — Southside scored five runs in the fifth to take a 7-3 lead before tacking on seven more runs in the sixth to top Etowah on Saturday.

Julia Hurley led the Panthers (7-8) at the plate with three hits, including a home run, three runs scored and three RBIs.

Macie Herren added two hits, including a home run, two runs scored and a RBI for Southside. Maddie Griffith and Karlee Thompson also had two hits each.

Alexis Rennhack went the distance on the mound for the Panthers. She allowed six hits, three earned runs and five walks, while striking out seven.

BOYS SOCCER

Southside 11, Jacksonville 1

JACKSONVILLE — Isaac Frankin scored five goals in the top-ranked Panthers’ blowout victory over Jacksonville on Saturday.

Said Toumiba added two goals, while Kirk Franklin, Anders Dongsgaard, Carter Huffstutler and Ariq Chandra had a goal each. Cade Thompson and Dongsgaard added two assists each.

Jake Bell had three saves on the day at goal.

Southside is scheduled to host Lincoln on Tuesday.

Collinsville 11, New Hope 1

NEW HOPE — Collinsville picked up it second win in a row to improve to 3-0 in Region 7 play Friday night.

Jason Perez scored seven goals for the Panthers (4-4). Juan Mendez added two goals, while Roberto Diaz and Roberto Carlos had a goal each.

Collinsville is scheduled to host its first game of the season on Monday against Whitesburg Christian before traveling to Sylvania on Tuesday.

GIRLS GOLF

White Plains captures 2020 Kickoff Classic title

GADSDEN — White Plains was nine shots better than Hartselle on Saturday to claim the 2020 Kickoff Classic championship at Twin Bridges Golf Course.

Hanna Dryar shot a 73, and Abby Gattis shot a 79 to finish second and third, respectively.

Jinger Heath of Hartselle was the low medalist after shooting a 66. Hartselle finished with a team score of 248, while White Plains finished with a 239.

Southside finished fourth, while White Plains No. 2 team was third with a 313.
