WILLISTON — For Trenton baseball coach Scott Hall, Williston will always be a special place.

It was here that Hall led the Red Devils, armed with a strong arm and lethal bat in future Gator Austin Langworthy, to win back to back Class 1A state titles in 2014 and 2015.

On Thursday night, Hall was on the visitors side but got another stellar pitching performance.

Juniors Trent Becker and Wyatt Duthu combined on a 1-hitter, and the Tigers scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back, winning 7-0 over the Red Devils.

“It is weird (being on the visitors side), but I loved my time here,” Hall said. “I really enjoyed it and hated to leave, but as a Christian, God had other plans for me.

“I thought the first inning we were really aggressive on the basepaths. The ability to keep running really helped our team get going.”

Trenton (11-3) opened with three straight hits in the four-run first off Williston starter Parker Seay, with Blake Hall, Gator commit Wyatt Langford and Jacob Guthrie all picking up RBIs.

The Tigers added a run in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

Williston (9-5), meanwhile, struggled at the plate and got on base just three times. The Red Devils threatened in the fifth, but Becker was able to get out of the jam, leaving a runner on third base.

“He (Becker) threw great,” Hall said. “He is one of those savvy lefties, he’s just a good pitcher.”

Langford had two hits for Trenton, including a double in the first, and two RBIs. Leadoff batter Zach Hardee had a hit and scored three runs, and Guthrie had a hit and scored two runs.

Senior Jake Elder had the only hit for the Red Devils.

“We haven’t been playing well and it showed again tonight,” said Williston coach Jim Smith. “We have to hit a little better, our approach wasn’t good tonight.”

It was only the second time Williston has been shut out this season.

Trenton hosts Bell on Friday in a District 7 matchup, while the Red Devils travel to Hilliard in a District 6 contest.
