Che Adams is a player Middlesbrough were strongly linked with in January.

Boro are believed to have made an enquiry about the possibility of signing the 22-year-old striker, who was also targeted by Burnley.

Given the Premier League interest in Adams, his destination in the summer - if he, as expected, leaves Garry Monk’s Birmingham - will almost certainly be the top flight.

But if Middlesbrough do win promotion, there’s a good chance they’ll renew their interest.

They’ll face some stiff opposition if they do, though, with Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur showing interest and Celtic and Watford among the clubs believed to have had Adams watched in recent weeks.

So how has Leicester-born Adams, who is on Alex McLeish’s radar thanks to a Scottish grandparent - performed since the speculation linking him with a move in January?

Joseph Chapman from Birmingham Live says the striker is on fire.

Che Adams battles with Danny Batth at St Andrew's

“Quite simply, Adams is in the form of his life,” he said. “Snapped up during the tenure of Gary Rowett in the summer of 2016 from Sheffield United, Adams failed to reach double figures in either of his first two campaigns at B9.

“Sure, the off-field matters were a significant distraction; in that time he worked under five different permanent managers. With Blues now settled under Monk as a collective, and Adams looking as fit and as sharp as ever alongside partner in crime Lukas Jutkiewicz, he is flourishing and already has more goals this term than his previous two seasons combined. Nineteen goals in 32 games - including two hat-tricks - is absolutely no mean feat.

“Adams was a goalkeeping save away from levelling a club record set by Trevor Francis in 1978 when he was denied by Bolton keeper Remi Matthews last Tuesday.

“Having netted in six consecutive league games - scoring eight goals in all in that time - Adams was prevented from equalling Francis’ magic seven in the dying moments as the Trotters left St Andrew’s with a surprise win.”

It’s clear Adams has a good attitude because he hasn’t allowed the links to Premier League clubs to turn his head.

But what are the chances of his leaving in the summer?

Looking at the options, Chapman said: “As Monk has stressed previously, Adams hasn’t kicked up a fuss, or downed tools - indeed, if anything, his performances have continued to improve since January.

Dani Ayala challenges Che Adams at Birmingham

“There is a whole host of contributing factors to this situation. What division will Blues be in? Certainly if they retain the mantle as the division’s dark horses then a play-off place could be achieved.

“Then there is the uncertainty on the FFP (financial fair play) front, which at this point could potentially end Blues’ promotion hopes.

“What league will Southampton and Burnley be in next season? Certainly there are no guarantees that either the Saints or the Clarets will be above Blues. Crucially, Adams has three years left on his current deal at St Andrew’s, signed while Harry Redknapp was boss; that puts the club in a strong position on the negotiating front, you’d have thought.”
