Newcastle announced that they had loaned out Elias Sorensen to League Two side Carlisle United for the season last week, and it could turn out to be a huge error from Steve Bruce.

With Joelinton still doubtful for Sunday’s tough trip to Tottenham Hotspur, we could be down to the bare bones at the sharp end of the pitch for a game that we are always going to find difficult.

Andy Carroll is still at least four weeks away from being fully fit, Dwight Gayle is unlikely to return for a couple of weeks, Allan Saint-Maximin could return, but is yet to find his feet at a new club, meaning the treatment room is quite full with our strikers.

The result could see a worst case scenario of Yoshinori Muto ploughing a lone furrow up front in the Capital on Sunday, despite the prognosis being that Joelinton may be fit for the game.

So it raises questions over the club’s decision to loan out their young Danish striker with a striker injury crisis on their hands.

Elias Sorensen still has a lot to learn but could have been an option

Of course, Sorensen is nowhere near the finished article, and not the answer to play Premier League football week in, week out, but as an emergency option on the bench, he could have done a job for the club.

He is a fantastic prospect for the future, and the last thing anyone would want to do is stunt his development by throwing him into a situation where he could be out of his depth.

But just having him on the bench as cover, until the injury situation eases, could have helped, and also given him some experience of being involved in the squad.

When the crisis ends, he could then have been given his loan move, even if it had to wait until January.

Time will tell if it was the right move, but the quicker the senior strikers get back training, and available for selection, the better it will be for the team.
