An incident in which a pupil allegedly squirted a chemical at a classmate at a Leatherhead school is under investigation.

Surrey Police was called by Therfield School after a Year 7 pupil is alleged to have squirted the substance in a science class on Monday (March 25), although the school said it was diluted enough that it did not cause injury.

Head teacher at Therfield , in Dilston Road, Leatherhead, Mr James Malley, said: "There was an incident that took place this morning in a science lesson and we can confirm that the very diluted chemical involved did not cause any injury. Staff acted quickly to respond to the incident and reassure the students.

"We are investigating the incident and will take appropriate and strong action accordingly. We take any incident of unacceptable behaviour very seriously and we will continue to work closely with the families of students involved.

"This is a very rare incident for us and we will not tolerate behaviour such as this."

A police spokesman confirmed a report that a student had "squirted" a "substance". The incident was reported to police in the afternoon and is currently under investigation.

Therfield School is a mixed comprehensive school for pupils aged 11–18. It is rated 'Good' by Ofsted in a January 2019 short inspection.
