An appeal has been launched after a cat was found in very poor condition on a Glasgow street.

The Scottish SPCA was alerted by a member of the public who found the cat on Reidhouse Street in the Balornock area of the city.

The elderly female cat was very emaciated due to neglect and struggled to walk, had overgrown nails and matter fur, withe the charity suspecting the neglect happened over a long period of time.

Sadly, the extent of the cat's condition meant she had to be put down.

The Scottish SPCA are now calling for anyone with information about the cat or the person responsibly for her neglect to get in touch.

Inspector Vickery said: "The elderly female cat was found in a very bad way.

"Her condition was due to various neglect-related issues.

"She was emaciated and was struggling to walk. She had overgrown nails and her fur was matted. Her gums were decaying and infected.

"We immediately took her for veterinary treatment where it was determined that the kindest thing to do was put her to sleep.

"We would like to speak to the person responsible for this level of neglect.

"The extent of the cat’s issues suggest this did not happen overnight and she would have been caused a great deal of suffering.

"If anyone can help with our enquiry, we would urge them to call our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999."
