A rally will take place in the city centre today to show Glasgow's solidarity with the people of Hong Kong.

The demo has been organised to show unity with residents of the region, which has been gripped by violent protests since June 2019, sparked by controversial legislation to extradite criminals to mainland China and Taiwan.

As the situation in Hong Kong continues to escalate, protesters here in Scotland's biggest city want to demonstrate their unity with campaigners, following the recent introduction of a law to ban masks.

Organisers say: "As you may already know, Hong Kong is facing one of its greatest humanitarian crisis right now. Police brutality, inhumane torture, has cast white terror into the hearts of the people of Hong Kong

"On 4th October, the Hong Kong Government passed an anti-mask law with colonial era emergency law, completely ignoring and destroying both the constitutional law, the rule of law and bypassing proper legislative procedures in Hong Kong.

"The path towards democracy and freedom is beset on all sides with the tyranny of evil men. No matter what lies ahead, Hong Kongers would rather die on our feet than live on our knees. We ask you, whether you're from Hong Kong or not, to support and stand in solidarity with the people of Hong Kong."

The demonstration takes place from 3pm - 6pm in George Square.
