Motorists heading north and south out of Gloucestershire have been caught up in long delays.
One lane was closed on the northbound carriageway between junction eight for the M50 and junction seven for Worcester and Evesham.
At one point, all traffic on the motorway was stopped for the works to be carried out as quickly and safely as possible.
The lane closure caused problems back in Gloucestershire as motorists left the motorway at junction nine for Tewkesbury to avoid the northbound delays.

Delays reported back to junction 11 for Gloucester and the Golden Valley Bypass.
Meanwhile, there are long delays and stop-start traffic on the M5 southbound in Bristol.
Elsewhere in the county, there are delays after a serious two-car collision blocked the A433 Tetbury Road between Cirencester and Tetbury.

FINAL UPDATE ON THE ROADS
The tree in Highfield, Lydney is the only outstanding incident on local roads.
There are planned roadworks including the A46 Cheltenham Road. It is closed in both directions during the night between A435 (Teddington Hands Roundabout, Teddington) and A4184 (Evesham).

A433 in both directions re-opened, traffic easing, serious accident cleared between Oxleaze Road (Trull) and Culkerton Turnoff (Culkerton).

The road remains closed following an accident first reported around 11:50.

Congestion cleared on the A38
Traffic returned to normal on A38 between Sandhurst Lane (Twigworth) and A4019 (Coombe Hill).
