Police are investigating a suspected arson attack near an Asda store in Gloucester.

Officers from Gloucestershire Constabulary received reports of a man setting fire to cardboard near the Bruton Way supermarket at around 11.55pm on Monday night.

Firefighters from Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service and police attended the fire and the blaze was quickly extinguished.

No one was injured in the incident and there was no damage caused to any property.

The force are now treating the incident as arson and asking the public to assist them with their enquiries.

A spokeswoman from Gloucestershire Constabulary confirmed the incident and said: “At about 11.55pm on Monday, May 18, we received a report of a man setting fire to some cardboard near to the Asda store, in Bruton Way, Gloucester.

“Fire and police attended and the fire was quickly extinguished.

“No damage to property and no-one injured.

“This is being treated as arson and anyone with information is asked to contact us quoting incident 532 of May 18.”

A spokeswoman for Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 11.58pm last night by member of public to reports of a fire at Asda, Bruton Way.

"One crew from Gloucester North attended and used buckets to put out the small fire. The Stop message received at 00.13am and crew left the scene at 00.16am."
