Council contractors have been asked to head to a park in Gloucester after reports of excessive amounts of rubbish being seen there.

There are about 15 caravans currently occupying part of Holmleigh Park in Tuffley, having arrived a few days ago. Gloucester City Council, which owns the land, has also obtained a court order for their removal.

Gloucester City Councillor Stephan Morgan (C, Tuffley) said: “I drove past where the travellers are at the moment and there is an awful lot of rubbish piled up there.

The travelling community has arrived in Tuffley on Holmleigh Park.

“There is a grey recycling bin in the park and there are a lot of black bin bags piled up around it.

“I have been into the council to tell them about the issue and they are arranging with Amey to go and collect the rubbish immediately.

“I think what is there is just general household rubbish. The contractors will not be going into the site just clearing up around the area. I have no doubt that we will find a lot of rubbish in the hedges though afterwards.

“I have met and talked to other councillors about what has been happening in the area and thankfully we have had no reports of antisocial behaviour from the site.”

A spokesperson for Gloucester City Council said: “We have obtained a court order today which means that we can now instruct bailiffs to move the travellers on. As soon as the site is vacated, we will arrange for it to be cleaned straightaway.

"Looking ahead longer term, we are investigating ways to prevent this from happening again.”
