A man who stayed at a Gloucester hotel with his dad has slammed the venue saying it doesn’t deserve its four-star rating.

The 28-year-old man from Durham and his father checked into the Hallmark Hotel in Gloucester on May 18.

Shaun and 62-year-old father, were on a one-night stopover in Gloucester to see family.

They were coming back from a visit to Windsor and were heading back home to Durham the next day.

Shaun, who is currently self-employed and runs his own money-saving website, had chosen the hotel because he thought it was a "good deal", costing £192 for one night in an advance booking deal.

But he soon noticed problems with his room.

The handrail for the disabled toilet was broken, Shaun claims

He told Gloucestershire Live: "The first thing I noticed was the shower's handrail, which was rusty and dirty.

"Then I noticed that the air vent in the room was dirty and obviously hadn't been cleared.

"Everything looked like it needed to be replaced."

Other things Shaun had noticed were stains on the mattress and the leg had broken off the hotel room's ironing board.

But one of the most noticeable issues was the window in the hotel room, which was cracked and whose handle was starting to fall off.

Shaun said: "The pictures of the hotel room on the website were nothing like what I saw.

"It's the first four-star hotel I'd been to, usually I would have just booked a Premier Inn or something."

Dust gathered in the lampshade in the room

Shaun claims he immediately went down to the reception and informed the manager of the room's defects.

The hotel denies this and that he only raised the issues when he checked out of the room.

He said the hotel staff were "mostly helpful" but put the defects of the room down to "general wear and tear".

He said: "The lamp looked like it was burnt at the top - that doesn't look like wear and tear.”

The hotel apologised to Shaun and offered him a 50% refund on the room.

However, Shaun said the offer was an "insult", saying that he would have expected a full refund.

The leg had broken off the ironing board

Shaun continued: "It was a complete waste of money.

"The handrail for the hotel room toilet was broken, so it's just as well my father isn't frail or he could have hurt himself."

Since checking out of the hotel, Shaun has been contacted by the hotel offering him a £150 room at the price of £100 - but he says it's "not good enough".

Shaun says: "For me, the hotel should have lost a star because of that room.

"There was a hole in the curtains and rust on the pipes in the bathroom."

What the hotel said

A Hallmark Hotel spokesman said: “We pride ourselves on the utmost levels of cleanliness and hospitality, and dealing with guest complaints as soon as they are raised - we are investigating this case.

"Unfortunately, Mr Beard did not bring these points to the team’s attention until checkout, so we did not have the opportunity to address his concerns until he was due to depart, at which point we did everything we could to make up for any shortfalls.”
