Gloucester City Council's old headquarters looks a bit different today.

It's a building which for years residents have gone to for help on council tax, getting on the housing waiting list and to sort out their recycling collections.

But now its old HQ, in Herbert Warehouse at Gloucester Docks, has undergone a small makeover.

A picture sent to the Local Democracy Reporting Service shows a worker painting over the bold Gloucester City Council letters emblazoned on the famous red brick warehouse.

The change is because the authority's face-to-face reception has moved a seven minute walk away to Westgate Street and Herbert Warehouse, along with two others formerly used as back office space by the authority, is on the market.

The new reception opened its doors on July 31, and can be found on 92-96 Westgate Street.

The move follows the city council's recent relocation to Gloucestershire County Council's offices in Shire Hall.

The city council said both moves will mean it will be able to save at least £100,000 each year.

The authority's previous base, at the Herbert, Kimberley and Phillpotts Warehouse, is currently being marketed by Bruton Knowles.

The city council have not confirmed what potential uses the warehouses will be, but a hotel is on the cards subject to necessary consents, it added.

Councillor Hannah Norman, cabinet member for performance and resources (C, Quedgeley Severn Vale) said: “To avoid confusion, the city council sign on Herbert Warehouse is being painted over today.

"Our reception can now be found at 'The Gateway', 92-96 Westgate Street.

“The Gateway is a key part of improving the way we deliver our services.

"With improved facilities, increased opening hours and the new appointments system, we are improving how the council supports residents who need to meet with the council in a more comfortable, friendly environment at a time that suits them.”
