One of Gloucester's radio stations is leaving the city as Heart made a group-wide announcement this morning.

The radio studio is based in Eastgate Street in the city centre.

Today British media company Global has announced that it is to close 10 studio sites - and the Gloucestershire studio, located on Eastgate Street in Gloucester, is one of the 10.

Global's Founder and Executive President Ashely Tabor made the announcement to staff via video link this morning.

This news comes as Global - the owner of the largest commercial radio company in Europe - revealed that it will broadcast national breakfast shows on the Capital, Heart and Smooth networks by the end of this year.

This means Heart will be getting a single breakfast show across England, Scotland and Wales on all stations owned by Global and Communicorp in the coming months.

This is an ongoing story and we will continue to update it in the live blog below.

Why the change?

Ashley Tabor, founder and executive president of Global, said: “This will enable Global to offer true national competition on FM, across the UK, to BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 2, with real scale on both FM and Digital for the first time at breakfast. This is a true breakthrough in the commercial radio sector and Global, with the 3 largest brands in commercial radio in Heart, Capital & Smooth, will lead this fundamental change.”

What other studios are saying

DevonLive is reporting how Radio Exe is “sorry, but not surprised” at the news.

They added: “We think it is a travesty that local radio licenses can be used this way. Having just invested in new studios in Exeter, we can assure our listeners that Radio Exe remains thoroughly committed to broadcasting from Devon on both FM and DAB digital radio.”

Where will shows be broadcast from?

From now on the studio will not be broadcasting from Gloucester, but Bristol instead.

Radio Today is reporting that Heart will get a single breakfast show across England, Scotland and Wales on all stations owned by Global and Communicorp in the coming months – putting an end to the current line-up of 22 breakfast shows and their teams. And instead of 23 separate drivetime shows, there will be 10 covering the larger areas.

At the weekends, all programmes will be broadcast from London.
