Bosses at a homeless shelter in Gloucester have been beaming with warmth and pride after they received a handwritten letter from someone they helped.

Earlier this winter a rough sleeper from London approached Gloucester City Mission after they found themselves stranded in Gloucester.

The George Whitefield Centre in Great Western Road put them up for the night and gave them £10 so they could get a coach back to the capital.

Now that person has thanked them with a handwritten letter and a cheque to reimburse the shelter.

In the letter they said: “A couple of weeks ago I found myself temporary and stranded on the streets of Gloucester, for a couple of nights.

“'You', at Gloucester City Mission were kind enough, as to help me out. 'You' gave me £10 (as well as a place on one night [sic]) as so I could get a coach back to London, then to my flat. This was not to be paid back, but even when it was given to me, I vowed to myself that I would pay it back.

“As a result, please accept the enclosed £10 cheque as either me paying it back even simply as a small donation.

“Off to volunteer for a charity, I normally do so at weekends for a few hours. Thank you for your help when I was in need.”

A spokesman for Gloucester City Mission sad: “This has made our day for lots of reasons.

“We received this letter from someone who recently stayed for a night in the Winter Shelter.

“Please take a moment to read it and to pray for the people who need shelter and support. We have so many good news stories.”
