Hospital chiefs are urging people not to come to A&E in Gloucesteshire unless they are critically ill for the second day running.

Bosses say the emergency department has been particularly busy recently and people should consider being treated elsewhere.

They issued a similar warning yesterday saying there wasn't a single reason for so many people turning up for treatment.

The statement from NHS chiefs said: "Our two emergency departments are extremely busy.

"They are there for people with very serious injury and life threatening conditions."

They are urging the public to:
Use your community pharmacy - a great first port of call for minor ailments and they can advise on whether another NHS service is needed

If you have an illness that won’t go away or an urgent medical need, call your GP surgery and if closed, phone NHS 111

The GP Gloucester Health Access Centre is also open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week (call 01452 336290 for an appointment)

Use Community Hospital Minor Injury and Illness Units - they are open every day until late

The ASAP Glos NHS App and asapglos.nhs.uk website can guide you through your options, step by step.

Friday's warning comes one the day Cheltenham MP Alex Chalk and his Liberal Democrat parliamentary opponent Max Wilkinson raised fears that Cheltenham General could be down graded if gut surgery is concentrated at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital as planned.

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust proposals for moving stomach, liver and appendix surgery out of Cheltenham has led to fears it is the first step to the hospital being downgraded.

MP Alex Chalk said: "Before the changes go out for consultation next year, I have asked Trust planners to think again; specifically, to work up proposals to ensure that, if general surgery moves to GRH, the quid pro quo is that all elective (ie scheduled) interventions are based here at CGH.

"That way, we can keep a critical mass on general surgeons on-site."
