It was revealed this week by the Mayor of Ross-on-Wye that it is thought that the Coronavirus epidemic has yet to peak in the area.

The number cases has increased more quickly in Herefordshire than other areas of the country in recent weeks, including Gloucestershire.

Between May 1 and May 20, Gloucestershire saw 100 new cases of Covid-19 in the county, leaving the total number of cases at 1,354. Equating to 7.39 per cent of all cases occurring in May.

In Herefordshire, there have been far less cases, with 430. However, on May 1 there were 314, meaning 116 have occurred in just 20 days. This means that over a quarter, 26.98 per cent, of all cases in the county have occurred in May.

Despite having had 924 fewer cases than Gloucestershire, the rate of infection is higher in Herefordshire.

The county has a much lower population, around 190,000, compared to Gloucestershire’s population of around 630,000.

The rate of infection per 100,000 people in Herefordshire is 223.8, in Gloucestershire it is 213.7. These are both compared to the rate across England of 262.
