Protesters, some dressed as crown court barristers, superglued themselves to benches inside Gloucestershire County Council's main chamber.

The council is today holding its crucial budget meeting but proceedings were brought to halt by the group, from activist network Extinction Rebellion, who glued themselves to the public gallery demanding the authority recognise climate change in its budget.

Councillors left the chamber, police were called and the lights were turned off.

The meeting was suspended for about an hour, with police eventually using cola to unstick the protesters from the public gallery.

Local Democracy Reporter Ligh Boobyer is covering the meeting, and said: "Climate change protest group Extinction Rebellion have halted the meeting against the council’s planning on air pollution.

"Staging the protest, they say that Gloucestershire County Council is 'guilty of climate negligence'.

"They have glued themselves to the furniture 'until the budget is amended', and they've been singing."

You can see how it happened in the updates below.

How they got unstuck

Protesters apparently used Coca-Cola to unglue themselves. Bizarre.

One of the protesters, Sid Saunders (who’s the man who staged a hunger strike at Shire Hall last summer), has come out of the building and shown us his glue-covered hand.

What's happening now?

The council chamber at Shire Hall is still shut with the protesters and police inside. All the councillors have gone to different rooms in the building for the various political groups and the press - Local Democracy Reporter Leigh Boobyer and three BBC reporters - are waiting outside the chamber.

Who are Extinction Rebellion?

They are a national activist group trying to fight the causes of climate change. They have grown their presence in Gloucestershire lately as the Javelin Park incinerator gets closer to being operational, and were involved in the ‘money burning’ protest at that site a few weeks ago.
