Protestors stormed WH Smith and confronted staff over plans to house the city's Post Office in the nearby store.

A demonstration took place n King's Square on Saturday lunchtime in a bid to fight plans by the Post Office to close the facility in King's Square and move it to the newsagent and stationers round the corner in King's Walk Shopping Centre.

After speeches in the city centre square chants took place outside WH Smith.

Members of the public have told Gloucestershire Live that the actions of those involved made them feel uneasy.

One woman who wishes to remain anonymous said: “There was a large group of people that made their way into the shop and to the back windows and putting up their posters and getting in front of customers.

“They were trying to shove leaflets into customers hands and bugging the staff.

“Why should the staff in that shop be abused? It was threatening behaviour.

“The staff there are good so why should they get the brunt of that.”

Security staff from the Kingswalk shopping centre and City Safe officers were alerted and visited the shop.

Manager of Gloucester City Safe Steve Lindsay said: “The Kings Walk security staff and City Safe protection officers visited the shop and advised the protesters to leave.

“They were not shouting in the shop but being a nuisance to shoppers. It made people feel uncomfortable.

“I believe that they were putting leaflets in the books and the staff were concerned for their customers.

“The staff were more concerned for their customers. “
