Danny Cipriani is set to be recalled by England this week, according to reports.

The Gloucester fly-half looks like being handed a World Cup lifeline with Eddie Jones naming an updated training squad on Friday.

A group of 28 players are currently taking part in a training camp at Pennyhill Park which started on Sunday in preparation but Gloucester and Northampton players can be added from next week once players have gone through their mandatory five-week rest period following the conclusion of the season.

And the Daily Mail reports that there will be three Cherry and Whites players involved with uncapped duo Willi Heinz and Ollie Thorley included alongside Cipriani.

If that is the case, then it looks as though number eight Ben Morgan will miss out on selection despite an impressive season for Gloucester.

Prop Val Rapava Ruskin is already a part of the squad with England saying his workload would be managed to ensure post-season active rest periods.

Eddie Jones, the England head coach, shakes hands with Danny Cipriani

Cipriani has been overlooked by Jones since being arrested on Gloucester’s pre-season tour of Jersey last August having been picked for the first time by the Australian for the summer tour of South Africa, where he made his first Test start in 10 years.

The 31-year-old has enjoyed an outstanding first season at Gloucester, which saw him complete a unique double by winning the Premiership Rugby Player of the Season and RPA Players’ Player of the Year awards as he helped the side reach the play-offs.

Cipriani will now be hoping to convince Jones that he deserves a place on the plane to Japan in September and he could get a chance in the warm-up games in August with two fixtures against Wales before England face Ireland and Italy.

He was also called up by England before the 2015 World Cup by Stuart Lancaster but did not make the final squad.

New Zealand-born scrum-half Heinz qualifies for England through his grandmother and attended a training camp with the squad two years ago.

Thorley was part of England’s wider squad during this year’s Six Nations but is yet to make his debut.

His sensational form for Gloucester saw him named RPA Young Player of the Year and he has been rehabilitating at Hartpury in recent weeks after suffering a knee injury.

England’s full World Cup training squad will be named on July 4, which will include players from Premiership finalists Saracens and Exeter, and Jones will have to whittle it down to 31 players before the tournament begins.
