TalkSport radio host Adrian Durham has categorically stated that Danny Cipriani should be England’s captain for the World Cup in Japan.

Following England’s final weekend draw against Scotland in the 2019 Guinness Six Nations Durham hailed Cipriani an “inspiration”, claiming he should be the captain when England play in the World Cup later this year.

Discussing Cipriani, 31, and the England captaincy, he said: "The key point for me is he must play, and he doesn’t just have to play but he has to be the captain. It’s not just because he’s a brilliant player it’s so much more than that.

Should Danny Cipriani be England’s captain at the World Cup?

"He’s an inspiration if you look at his life and the way he conducts himself. Yes, he’s had bumps along the way, but we’ve all had those, and he’s recovered from those.

"He has responded to those in the right way, he’s a role model and has a social conscience. He has a column, the things he tweets.

"This is a guy who really cares for the world around him. That’s the kind of guy I want to be the captain of my country.’’

He complimented the fly-half for staying in the Premiership to ply his trade while retaining the right to play for his country, but England coach Eddie Jones hasn’t favoured the Gloucester man, choosing to go with Owen Farrell and George Ford instead.

Durham added: "He’s shown commitment to his country by not going to France and taking the money and taking a far more lucrative contract than he currently has. Because he wanted to play for his country and repeatedly Eddie Jones has ignored him.’’

Discussing who should lead the national team and ignoring Owen Farrell's presence, he said, "there is no captain for England at the moment’’, before adding it deserves to be someone in the pack, preferably Maro Itoje or Jamie George.
