Ben Vellacott is set to leave Gloucester to join Wasps at the end of the season.

The scrum-half’s future has been up in the air for a few months with reports that the Coventry-based outfit were interested and Gloucestershire Live understands that he has agreed to make the switch.

There will be a sense of deja vu for Cherry and Whites fans, who saw another young scrum-half Dan Robson prised away from them four years ago by Wasps.

At that time Robson left to get more regular rugby as he was being kept out of the Gloucester side by then captain Greig Laidlaw and Vellacott has found himself in a similar situation with club captain Willi Heinz ahead of him.

Even when Heinz has been out injured this season, Callum Braley, who recently signed a new contract with the club, has often been preferred.

Robson has been a standout performer in the Premiership since moving to the Ricoh Arena and looks poised to win his first England cap against Ireland in the Six Nations opener next week.

Like Robson, Vellacott is a product of the Gloucester academy and went to Hartpury College – ironically the pair now look like they will competing with each other for a place in the Wasps side next season.

Vellacott, 23, has scored 12 tries in 45 appearances for Gloucester and the former Scotland Under-20 international was named in an England training squad at the end of a breakthrough 2017-18 season in the Premiership.

Gloucester, who are yet to make any signings for the 2019-20 season, could look to bring in a scrum-half to replace Vellacott, although Charlie Chapman is the latest from their production line of number nines who could step up to the senior squad.

It was thought that Gloucester were keen on signing Faf de Klerk but he recently signed a contract to keep him at Sale Sharks until 2023.

Gloucester Rugby have declined to comment.
