There's nothing that gets folks in Gloucestershire passionate quite like fish and chips.

People have as much loyalty to their favourite fish and chip shop as they do to their favourite football team.

In honour of National Fish and Chip Day this week, we set out to get a fantastic fish and chip shop.

Breaking: we might have found it.

The Wellington Fryer in Gloucester may just be the only fish and chip shop you need know about.

Open for just over a year on Wellington Street, the chippy could easily be missed - its just on the corner in a neighbourhood location perfect for locals.

Inside, it's clean and modern, with a friendly, nautical decor and bright white tiling.

So what's on the menu?

The Wellington Fryer boasts a more extensive menu than most, with vegetarian and vegan options on the menu, as well as branching out to calamari and scampi.

Although I was desperately curious to try out the vegetarian burger, I knew the day called for a good old-fashioned fish and chip.

A decent fish and chip is what unites us - but how we each take it is what divides.

Personally, I eschew salt and vinegar in favour of ketchup and a substantially tangy tartar sauce.

Since Wellington's tartar sauce is homemade, I had to give it a go.

The portion was reasonable - there's nothing worse than a helping too small or too large.

Even the lemon wedge added a nice touch as I squeezed it across the fish - a move which is, of course, optional.

There isn't a great deal to say about this fish and chip experience except that it was fantastic and far outstripped the experiences I have had in other places in the county.

Small, local and with a friendly atmosphere, it was truly a delight to pop into.

The chips weren't too greasy and had a great crispiness to them - which is a feature missing from many chip shops these days.

The fish came apart gorgeously - while the batter was crisp on the edges, the fish inside was silky smooth.

The tartar sauce worked out fantastically as a dip and the entire thing was delicious.

It truly tasted like there was time and focus put in, as well as quality produce used.

Placed in a quiet lane nearby Gloucester park, it really doesn't get the praise and attention it should.

But we want to hear your thoughts.
