Gloucester is about to get a new restaurant, serving up a slice of something not actually available in the city up until now.

And it looks like it could create a little Mediterranean corner in Gloucester Docks.

An authentic Italian restaurant, complete with a pizza oven imported from Naples is set to open in the autumn.

It will fill the unit left vacant following the closure of the Californian style restaurant earlier in the year.

Carlo Colucci made the announcement on his Instagram page. Posting a tour of the vacant restaurant in Merchants Quay, next to Greek on the Docks, explaining that his dad Tony and other relatives were behind the project.

Tony confirmed the restaurant will be a traditional Italian.

"My cousins and I have had the idea of doing something and then the unit came up for rent," he said, confirming that the restaurant will compliment nearby Caffe Corretto, which is also run by members of his family.

The interior kit out of the unit, which has been vacant since February, will start soon ahead of the arrival of the pizza oven from Naples later in the year.

Full details of what Tony and his family have in store will be revealed next week.
