The Thorntons store in Gloucester city centre has revealed it is closing.

The loss of the confectionery is another blow to Gloucester which has already lost café Patisserie Valerie and music retailer HMV in the last few weeks.

The sign which appeared in the shop announcing the closure states that the shop will close its doors for the final time on Saturday, March 2.

However the sign does reveal that the store in Cheltenham will remain open.

This is not the first time that a Thorntons has left Gloucester though. The outlet store in Gloucester Quays was replaced by another chocolate shop - Lindt.

A spokesperson for Thorntons said: "Like any retailer, we are continuously reviewing our store estates to ensure we are in the locations that meet our customers needs.

"As a result of such a review, the decision was taken to close the store at Gloucester on March 2 2019.

"Currently, seven staff members are employed at the store and we are looking to find them other employment opportunities where possible.

"Thorntons has been delighted to serve our many local customers over the years and we would encourage them to shop for their favourite Thorntons products at our Cheltenham store or online in the future."
