Train fans from across the South West headed to Gloucestershire today to see the world famous Flying Scotsman.

After leaving London Paddington early this morning the engine puffed through Kemble, Stroud and Stonehouse before nipping through Gloucester, Cheltenham and Ashchurch.

This afternoon the return leg took in Evesham, Moreton in Marsh and Kingham.

We brought you updates from along the line, including the latest timings and pictures of the train's progress through the county.

If you watched we would love to see your shots - send them to our weekend team for inclusion in any galleries or features we do.

But please stay safe, British Transport Police are urging those who head out to see the Flying Scotsman to stay off the tracks and watch from a safe location.

This is how it all unfolded

And that's a wrap

Takes me back to when I was young

Ingrid Twissell was one of the hundreds delighted to have seen the train and said it reminded her of her childhood when she used to stand on the bridge at Landsdowne Street in Cheltenham to see the trains from the station.

“It was great,” she said. “I had a face full of steam and it took me right back to the days when I used to stand on the bridge to watch the trains go underneath.

“Everybody loves a steam train, especially the Flying Scotsman. I think it’s because it takes people back to a different age.”

Well this woman had a closer encounter with the train than most

Kemble was the first station as the engine puffed through Gloucestershire and the crowds lining the platform of the historic station all kept back as the train approached, apart from one keen fan.

Three generations of one family came to see the Scotsman. Caroline and Julian Lott, son Tom and his wife Naomi and their son Jesse, three, and daughter Hannah one.

“Jesse is obsessed with trains and has a toy one at home,” said Tom of the Flying Scotsman. “ We have watched a little video of it at Reading but he is excited to see it in real life.

“I think my enthusiasm is more because of Jesse but it has a lot of history. It must have something because there three generations from one family here looking forward to seeing it.”

Afterwards the whole family were delighted and said as well as seeing the train, it was wonderful to hear the traditional noise of the locomotive on the tracks.

Like most children at the bridge, Jesse was delighted when the driver gave them a toot of the horn as the Flying Sctotsman travelled under the Pirton Bridge.

What happened last time the Flying Scotsman visited

It was 2017 the last time we were able to catch a glimpse of this beautiful engine.

We took a look at the Scotsman during a stop in Gloucester.

But the visit was delayed due to trespassers on the line near Cam and Dursley.
