Ex-Lake View coach Sterlin Gilbert lands NCAA coaching job with McNeese State

Former Lake View player and coach Sterlin Gilbert, most recently the offensive coordinator at the University of South Florida, accepted the position as head football coach at McNeese State.

LAKE CHARLES, LA. — Former Lake View head coach and player Sterlin Gilbert, a member of Lake View's 2016 athletic hall of fame class, was named head football coach at McNeese State University, according to a release from McNeeseSports.com.

Gilbert also played quarterback at Angelo State University from 1999-2002.

The announcement was made by McNeese State athletic director Bruce Hemphill on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2018.

"Through this process it became very clear that McNeese is very highly rated throughout the country and positions in our athletics department are extremely attractive," Hemphill said. "We are looking forward to the culture that Coach Gilbert will build and to the competitive team that he will lead the field."

Gilbert will be introduced to the public at a press conference at 11 a.m. Friday at the Jack V. Doland Fieldhouse at Mcneese State. This will be the first head coaching job for Gilbert.

As a player for Lake View, Gilbert was a three-time All-West Texas Super Team selection and led the Chiefs to a 28-6-1 record. He was the youngest member of the 2016 LVAHOF, inducted in his first year of eligibility.

Gilbert spent 2008-10 as the head coach of the Lake View Chiefs before being hired as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach with Temple High School in Temple, Texas, where he worked for a year.

After that, he began his college coaching career as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Eastern Illinois University in 2012, where he groomed current San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

For the past two seasons, Gilbert was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the University of South Florida. During that time, the team went 17-7 and beat Texas Tech in the Birmingham Bowl in 2017. Gilbert will coach his last game with the South Florida Bulls on Dec. 20, when they take on Marshall in the Gasparilla Bowl.
