At the beginning of the year, most of us made plans to visit Goa. Some of us introverted souls even came up with excuses to cancel those plans, until the pandemic did that job for everyone. While your Goa plans may have been canned, you can still enjoy these lip-smacking dishes Goan dishes at home. All you need is a can of beer or a glass of wine and tune in some nice music to relish these recipes that you can easily make at home.  

5 mouth-watering Goan recipes to try at home

1. Goan Prawn Curry

This spicy and savoury curry makes for one of the most satisfying meals that one can never get enough of. You can up your culinary skills by trying this delicious recipe at home. 

Ingredients 

500gm prawns (shelled and deveined)
2 cups coconut milk 
2 onions (chopped) 
1 tsp turmeric powder 
1 tsp coriander seeds 
1 tsp cumin seeds 
5 black peppercorns 
½ ginger 
4-5 garlic cloves 
½ cup grated coconut 
2-3 tbsp vinegar 
2-3 tbsp vegetable oil
2 green chillies 
3-4 dry red chillies
Salt to taste.  

Method:

Marinate prawns with turmeric and salt and keep it aside. Now in a blender, grind coriander seeds, cumin seeds, black peppercorns, ginger, garlic, red chillies, grated coconut and vinegar. In a pan, fry onion till they’re light brown. Add prawns and ground masala and cook for 2-3 minutes. Now, add coconut milk and cook until the gravy thickens. Garnish it with green chillies and serve.

2. Bebinca

When I travelled to Goa and tried Bebinca for the first time, I almost instantly fell in love with this dessert. This multi-layered delicacy is a hit among tourists and locals alike. And now you can easily make this at home using the following ingredients: 

Ingredients

600ml coconut milk 
250gm plain flour 
500gm sugar 
1 tsp ground nutmeg 
12 egg yolks 
2 cups ghee.  

Method:

In a bowl, mix coconut milk with flour, sugar, nutmeg and egg yolks and make a batter. Grease an oven proof deep sided dish with butter, pour a small amount of batter and spread evenly. Bake till it turns golden brown. Remove the dish and spread another layer of batter evenly and bake it. Repeat it until all the batter is used up. Remove Bebinca from the dish and let it cool. Cut into small pieces and serve.       

3. Goan Khatkhate

This vegetable stew is the ultimate comfort food for days when you want to try a new dish that is also light on your stomach. 

Ingredients: 

¼ cup Toor dal 
¼ cup green peas 
1 cup water
1 cup assorted vegetables of your choice (finely chopped) 
½ cup grated coconut 
½ tsp turmeric powder
2 red chillies 
1 tamarind
1 tbsp jaggery 
Salt according to taste 
Water as required.   

Method:

Soak Toor dal in water for half an hour. In a pan, add soaked dal, green peas and water. Cover it with a lid and cook for 10 minutes. Now add the chopped vegetables and cook till they’re soft. In a blender, blend grated coconut, red chillies and tamarind into a fine paste. Add the paste, salt and jaggery to the curry and cook for another 5 minutes.   

4. Sorak

This traditional spicy and tangy Goan curry is usually made during monsoons and is best enjoyed with a plate of steamed rice. To make this you will need the following ingredients:

Ingredients

 ½ cup grated coconut 
4 dry Kashmiri red chillies 
2 onions (sliced) 
2 garlic cloves
2 green chillies
1 tsp cumin seeds
½ tsp turmeric powder 
1 tsp coriander seeds
½ tsbp vegetable oil
3 tamarind
Salt as per taste
Water as required.  

Method:

In a blender, add cumin seeds, Kashmiri red chillies, turmeric powder, grated coconut, coriander seeds, 1 onion and garlic cloves. Add some water and blend it into a smooth paste. Now in a pan, add vegetable oil and the remaining onion and sauté it until it becomes crispy. Add the paste, salt and tamarind pieces and stir for 4-5 minutes. Add water depending on how thick or watery you want your gravy to be and cook on low flame for 5-10 minutes. Garnish it with slit green chillies and serve. 

5. Kulkul

Made with flour, sugar and coconut milk, this Christmas treat is the perfect gift for your sweet tooth. 

Ingredients

4 cups Maida (all-purpose flour)
2 cups vegetable oil
2 tsp baking soda
4 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp butter
2 cups coconut milk.

Method:  

In a bowl, whisk Maida, baking soda, salt and butter together. In a fresh bowl, mix coconut milk with sugar and add it to the flour mixture. Knead it into a dough and make tiny balls with it. Now, take a greased fork and gently press and roll the balls through it. Deep fry the rolls until they turn golden brown in colour and serve.
