FARGO — Police said they have taken two men into custody in connection with a Tuesday morning shooting that left one man dead and another seriously injured.

Reng Ayong, 21, of Fargo, was arrested on suspicion of reckless endangerment, possession of a stolen automobile, felon in possession of a firearm, and felony theft.

Darrell Simmons, 28, with no permanent address, was arrested on suspicion of criminal conspiracy.

Police officers were called about 7:40 a.m. to the 2500 block of Broadway on a report of gunshots being fired in the area near the north Fargo Hornbacher's.

Fargo police spokeswoman Jessica Schindeldecker said when officers arrived, they found a red vehicle crashed on a berm at Seventh Street North near Hornbacher's. She said detectives were interviewing witnesses and possible suspects but police believed everybody involved in the shooting was accounted for and they were not searching for anyone else.

Fargo Police Chief David Todd announced Tuesday afternoon that the two suspects were taken into custody in the area of the shooting. Todd said police also recovered two firearms believed to have been involved in the shooting.

One of the shooting victims died, and the other was taken to Sanford Medical Center for treatment.

In the hours after the shooting, the crime scene remained active, with officers and police dogs walking the neighborhoods around a blocked-off, two-block perimeter from 8th Street North and Broadway to 25th Avenue North to 20th Avenue North.

Schindeldecker says they were keeping the area taped off because they're not sure what areas were involved in the incident, so until they have a better picture of the event that occurred, they'll continue to keep the area blocked off.

Stacie Halbakken Zeller, who lives a block and a half from the scene, said while she didn't hear anything this morning, her neighbors did hear what they suspect was the vehicle crash, and because this is what she calls a "quiet, quiet neighborhood", it has shaken her and her neighbors.
