A date has yet to be set for United States and North Dakota flags to be flown at half-staff from dawn to dusk, according to Gov. Doug Burgum, who released a statement after a Grand Forks Police Department officer was fatally shot on Wednesday, May 27, while responding to a shooting incident at an apartment building.
A Grand Forks Sheriff’s Office deputy also was wounded in the incident, which claimed the life of a woman in the apartment and left the man authorities say initiated the shooting with gunfire injuries.
“Kathryn and I extend our deepest condolences to the family of the Grand Forks police officer who made the ultimate sacrifice today in the line of duty," said Burgum on Wednesday. "We ask all North Dakotans to pray for his loved ones, for the recovery of the injured deputy and for the continued safety of all law enforcement officers.
“This is a tragic reminder of the risk our brave men and women in uniform face every day when they put on the badge to protect our communities. We’re deeply grateful for the officers and deputies whose swift action prevented further loss of life, and we join the Grand Forks Police Department, Chief Mark Nelson and the entire law enforcement community in mourning this devastating loss," he said.
U.S. Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., also issued a statement regarding the Grand Forks Police Department officer who was fatally shot.

“Kris and I are praying for the officer’s family, colleagues and friends; the deputy sheriff injured during the same incident and the entire Grand Forks community shaken by this senseless act of violence," Cramer said. "Few vocations require a willingness to put your life on the line in defense of others. Law enforcement officers answer that call every day, offering to leave behind their loved ones and personal aspirations to keep our neighborhoods safe and secure. They deserve our undying gratitude as we mourn this tragedy.”
Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., today issued the following statement of condolence after the death of a Grand Forks Police Officer, who was killed in the line of duty:
“Mikey and I offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the officer who gave his life in the line of duty. We are praying for the officer’s loved ones, the injured deputy and the peace officers working to keep our communities safe. We honor this officer’s service and sacrifice and will keep his loved ones in our prayers," Hoeven said.
