WINCHESTER archaeologist Dr Simon Roffey will be speaking about medieval parish churches on Monday.
Dr Roffey of Winchester University, is addressing the Winchester Catholic History Group.
The illustrated talk A Vision of Salvation, the Art, Architecture & Archaeology of the Medieval Parish Church will consider the influence of medieval beliefs in the afterlife on the development of churches. This includes form, fabric, tombs, images and painting.
In particular it will examine the development of purgatorial beliefs and the role of the Chantry Chapel and related memorial spaces in late medieval religious experience. As well as the crucial and implicit role of the laity in church memorial practice.
Dr Roffey was involved with the long-running excavation of the medieval leprosy hospital off Alresford Road, No Man's Land, near Winchester.
The talk starts at 7.30pm in the Milner Hall, St Peter Street. Visitors welcome, £5 at the door, students with ID £2.50.
