THE number of people who have died after contracting coronavirus in localised areas has been revealed.

In a comprehensive data release, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) examined 20,283 virus deaths registered in England and Wales from March 1 to April 17.

Over this period, the ONS data has 30 recorded deaths involving coronavirus across the Winchester district. Winchester North and Sparsholt has the highest number of these deaths with eight, followed by Whiteley, Knowle and Wickham, and Winchester West both with four deaths.

Two areas of Winchester had no recorded deaths throughout this period - Colden Common and Twyford, and South Wonston, Sutton Scotney and Micheldever.

Bishop's Waltham and Waltham Chase; Oliver's Battery and Hursley logged three, while Denmead and Southwick; and Springvale and Itchen Abbas both recorded two.

The areas of Alresford; Swanmore, Hambledon and West Meon; Winchester Central and South; and Winchester East all recorded one death each.

Elsewhere, across Southampton there were 53 recorded deaths involving Covid-19, while Eastleigh had 22, the New Forest had 40, Test Valley had 18, Fareham had 48 and Gosport had 28.

The ONS has analysed details of the 20,283 deaths that occurred in England and Wales between March 1 and April 17, and which were registered by April 18, where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate as the underlying cause of death or a contributory factor.
