WINCHESTER Go LD is staying connected with service users during lockdown.

The charity, which offers free support to adults with learning disabilities, immediately started a WhatsApp group following the Government announcement to stay home.

Since then, volunteers have been in contact with the charity users, who are usually able to seek advice and take part in workshops at the Discovery Centre.

Helen, mother to Go LD member Jon said: “Winchester Go LD got everyone to put rainbows in their windows and they have stayed in constant contact.

“Jon’s just done a Low Level circuits session with them. Visually seeing his friends is important as well as keeping the routine going. Seeing everyone else at home also deepens his understanding of what we’re going through.

“They have hardly been off video conferencing, making Jon’s life just a little easier, but, importantly, making us feel that there are people out there who understand our situation.”

Go LD is also paying attention to health and wellness by running all weekly sessions on Zoom and offering four free sessions a week, including a Low Level Circuits on Saturday.

Kevin Stevens, Winchester Go LD Chair of Trustee’s said: “Some groups may remain overlooked, such as linguistically disadvantaged, those without the technology or ability and those on low income.

“Many people don’t have broadband or a smart phone. Winchester Go LD are also making daily phone calls.

“One lady told us her legs hurt. She has health concerns and walks with assistance but hasn’t been out much. We were able to pass this information on to her support provider.”

Lots of members are also in relationships and are currently unable to see each other.

The charity has been putting the couples in contact both online and via phonecall.

Kevin, added “Sometimes people’s circumstances mean that a problem can become a disaster. For instance we have a member who doesn’t have a card for his bank account and can only make withdrawals using a bank book.

“His bills weren’t being paid so staff have helped him contact the bank to set up direct debits. Zoom takes you into people’s homes and that can also be useful.

“Staff have been able to highlight issues; someone may need extra guidance on social distancing with neighbours.”

Any Winchester resident with learning disabilities can become a Go LD member by emailing info@winchestergold.org.uk or by calling 07949 093341 or 07534 838102.

The charity rely on fundraising and provide a free service.
