Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin says he’s nominating the city’s interim chief operating officer to hold the position on a permanent basis.

Bronin on Tuesday afternoon announced he will nominate Thea Montañez, who is also his chief of staff, to serve as COO for the city. The nomination is now subject to approval by the city council.

Montañez has been serving as Bronin’s chief of staff since Jan. 2016 and as interim COO since Sept. 2018. Montañez took over the interim COO post in place of another interim appointee, Ron Van Winkle.

The mayor in a statement said Montañez helps manage the city’s daily operations and has spearheaded major initiatives focused on supporting local youth and adults. Montañez, he said, has also led the effort to increase staffing levels for the city’s police and fire departments.

“Over the last four years, Thea Montañez has been my right hand in every aspect of city government, and she has earned the trust and confidence of our employees, community member and elected officials,” Bronin said.

Prior to working for the city, Montañez served as director of the North Hartford Promise Zone at the United Way. Years earlier, she held various roles at The Hartford Financial Services Group and was the director of operations for the Connecticut Convention Center from 2005 to 2009.

She also previously served as president to Hartford Public Library’s board of directors, and is currently a board member for Connecticut Public and the University of St. Joseph.

Montañez earned a bachelor’s degree in consumer studies from Syracuse University.
