Hartford axe-throwing business expands in New Haven

Get ready to unleash any lingering frustrations from the work week.

Hartford's Pine & Iron Axe Throwing officially opens tonight, Jan. 17, in downtown New Haven, at 770 Chapel St. 

The owners, the New Haven Experience Co. LLC, received the necessary approvals from city land use officials last summer. The owners spent months renovating the former retail space for use as a bar and axe-throwing venue.

Guests can make use of 11 throwing lanes for hurling axes at wooden targets. The business’ staff teaches technique and provides coaching to newcomers. Guests learn how to play a standard scored game, and then can compete against their friends.

The business also features a bar, lounge and a private throwing room.

Josh Kroscen, one of Pine & Iron’s’ owners, said the business has received a warm reception from New Haven locals, city staff and the business community.

This is the second venue for the company, which has a location in Hartford that opened in June 2018. 

“Those aware of Pine & Iron in Hartford have been excited to see they can now visit us in New Haven,” Kroscen said. “Others who are not familiar with Pine & Iron, or axe throwing in general, have been curious to see what it is all about.”

“The location we chose is quite unique,” Kroscen added. “And for the few who have visited before our opening, it has been gratifying to see their reaction as they step inside and see what we have done with the space and how much fun it will be on a night out. We are really looking forward to sharing the Pine & Iron experience with the New Haven area.”

Axe-throwing has become a popular activity across the country, and a way for guests to have fun, engage in some competition and relieve stress, according to the business’ owners. 

Mayor Justin Elicker said he is honored the business chose New Haven to be the home of its second club, which has created 12 new jobs in the city.

“It has added a unique and exciting new venue to our already vibrant downtown,” Elicker said.

Kroscen said they were drawn to this location because of its proximity to the New Haven Green and many nearby attractions. He also noted the area’s walkability and access to public transit and parking. 

“New Haven’s appreciation of the arts and love of unique experiences convinced us we were right for the neighborhood and that New Haven was right for us,” Kroscen said. 

According to Kroscen, Pine & Iron’s Hartford venue has hosted thousands of guests and regularly handles corporate events as well.
