Hartford’s Amistad Center for Art & Culture has appointed an Avon resident with legal, business development and community relations experience to lead the organization.

The Amistad Center for Art & Culture, housed in the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art on Main Street, says it recently named Kimberly Kersey as its new executive Director, succeeding W. Frank Mitchell. Her appointment is effective Feb. 17.

The Amistad Center, founded more than three decades ago, features a 7,000-piece collection of art, artifacts and cultural objects that highlight the experience and history of African-Americans.

Kersey has held a number of roles in recent years, including serving in marketing and development for Hartford nonprofit Operation Fuel, and as a licensed real estate agent in Moorestown, N.J., according to her LinkedIn profile.

She also previously worked as an adjunct professor at Rowan College at Burlington County and served as a commissioner on the New Jersey Tax Board. Kersey was also assistant counsel to New Jersey Governor James E. McGreevey and was on policy transition teams for President Barack Obama and U.S. Sen. Cory Booker.

Kersey earned a bachelor’s degree in art history from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J, and earned a juris doctor from Pennsylvania’s Villanova University School of Law. She later went on to practice law in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
