Wheeler Clinic, a Plainville-based provider of children’s outpatient, residential and community health and education services, said its CEO Susan Walkama will retire at the end of this month.
Becoming CEO in 2007, Walkama, who is a licensed clinical social worker, oversaw the nonprofit’s growth from about $40 million to just over $74 million in fiscal year 2018, more than half of which came from government grants.
During her tenure, Wheeler became a federally qualified health center, which is a community-based health provider that receives federal funds to provide primary care in underserved areas, and grew the nonprofit’s workforce from 750 people to over 1,000 people.
Wheeler says it provides primary care, pediatrics, dental care, addiction services and a variety of other offerings to more than 30,000 patients and families each year.
“Susan has been an exceptional leader through unprecedented change,” outgoing board chairwoman Christine Skelly said in a statement. “She did not chase trends, but led Wheeler to the cutting edge and lit a path for everyone to follow.”
Wheeler said it intends to announce Walkama’s replacement on Oct. 21.
