Hawks' Fourth Quarter Rally Falls Short in 61-54 Loss at UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. — The Hawks fourth quarter comeback attempt fell just short, as the Hartford women's basketball team fell to America East foe UMBC, 61-54, on the road at the UMBC Event Center on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Hawks fell to 0-19 on the year and 0-6 in the America East, while the Retrievers improved to 5-12 on the season and 1-5 in conference play.

UMBC 61, HARTFORD 54
Despite shooting 22% in the first quarter, the Hawks went into the second quarter trailing the Retrievers 13-6. After Hartford cut the deficit to 13-10 with 8:06 to go in the half, UMBC closed the second quarter with a 15-4 run to take a 28-14 lead into the break. 

After the Retrievers pushed its lead to 18, the Hawks responded with a 7-3 run to cut the deficit to 37-23. However, UMBC outscored Hartford 8-5 the rest of the quarter to take a 44-28 lead into the fourth quarter. The Hawks opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run, with all points coming from Carmen Villalobos to cut the deficit to 44-35 with 7:23 left in regulation. 

After UMBC built its lead up to 11 with 4:46 to go, Hartford went on a 14-4 run to cut the deficit to 54-53 with 1:07 left in regulation. However, the comeback came up just short as the Retrievers outscored the Hawks 7-1 in the final 34 seconds to take the 61-54 win.

  • Carmen Villalobos led the way with a team-high 16 points and added seven rebounds and a block
  • Villalobos has reached double-figure scoring in five-straight games
  • Jada Lucas and Charlette Leurs added nine apiece
  • Lucas reached 300 career points in the loss and is the only player on the active roster to score at least 300 career points
  • Te'yJah Oliver led the way for UMBC with a game-high 24 points
