HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) -Four Hawaii teachers are being honored with a prestigious national recognition.

On Tuesday, President Trump announced the awardees for the Presidential Excellence Awards in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering.

Teachers from schools in all 50 states were recognized. From Hawaii, the winners were:

  • Richard Ogawa of Kanoelani Elementary
  • Daphne Okunaga of Pearl City High
  • Daniel Taira of Lehua Elementary
  • Nel Venzon Jr. of Mililani High

It’s the highest U.S. government award given to math and science teachers kindergarten through 12th grade.

Teachers are selected based on their distinction in the classroom and dedication to improving science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education.
