AN organisation that helps good causes in Herefordshire handed out £246,000 last year.

The Herefordshire Community Foundation (HFC) made 124 grants in 2017/18, an increase of 11 (£69,000) on the previous year.

In the organisation's annual report, chairman Frank Myers says: "HCF has awarded more grants and reached a wider group of people than ever before.

"The need in Herefordshire is often hidden and we strive to identify the charities and individuals that need our help the most."

New initiatives include the commissioning of a report to highlight the changing needs in Herefordshire that aims to help the community to target its charitable efforts.

Mr Myers said he was also delighted by the donation by a Herefordshire business of the Iron Fund, which makes £200,000 available for immediate distribution and £50,000 as an endowment invested for the future. The pot of money will help tackle poverty, isolation and need in the county.

The foundation was set up to help donors target their charitable giving to local good causes.

It builds endowment funds so that contributions can be long-lasting, and it handles funds on behalf of the Government, the Big Lottery Fun and other national organisations.
