YOUNGSTERS have had their say on what Hereford city centre should look like in the future.

Twelve young people took on the role of local government officers as part of a council takeover day and part of the challenge was coming up with ideas for how the city centre should be designed.

The 12 looked-after children and care leavers from across the county demonstrated their skills in problem solving, team working and communications during a takeover simulation day, organised by Herefordshire Council.

The event was arranged to support young people in developing skills and accessing work opportunities, as well as encouraging them to get involved with the development of their city.

Split into four groups the children worked with elected members to create a vision for the city centre that would appeal to youngsters.

The groups also created their own versions of the council’s Herefordshire Now magazine with a focus on youth.

The day ended with each group giving a presentation to explain their ideas to a panel.

Councillor Elissa Swinglehurst, Cabinet Member for Children and Families, said:

“It was great to see the enthusiasm and creativity.

“The workshop gave them the opportunity to experience what it feels like to work in an organisation and the chance to have their say on what they would like to see in Hereford city centre.

“We were extremely impressed with the ideas and these will now be used to create an image of how they would like the city to look in the future.”
