Nearly 14,000 people in Herefordshire have now signed the 'Scrap Brexit' petition.

The online petition on the House of Commons website has passed the 5.5m mark, easily the biggest ever recorded.

It coincides with the big 'Put It To The People' march in London at the weekend which organisers say attracted one million protestors calling for a second referendum.

In the North Herefordshire constituency on Monday afternoon 7,069 people (8%) had voted to Revoke Article 50 - which would cancel Brexit.

In Hereford and South Herefordshire the figure was 6,660 (6.7%).

In neighbouring areas the highest number of signatures was 8,878 (9.5%) in West Worcestershire.

Brecon and Radnor had 5,623 (8.1%); Ludlow 6,255 (7.3%), and Forest of Dean 6,248 (7.1%).

Parliament and the government are currently considering what the next step should be after the EU granted an extension of Article 50 when the Prime Minister's withdrawal deal was twice heavily defeated in the Commons, with both Leave and Remain backing MPs voting against.

The government has the power to revoke without a new referendum, but says it has no intention of doing that.

However, some MPs say they would vote for it if the alternative was a No Deal scenario because of the forecast severe damage to the economy.

The original referendum was split 17.4m (52%) to Leave, 16.1m (48%) to Remain.

Most opinion polls have put Remain ahead by 4 or 5 percentage points for the last year or so.
