HEREFORDSHIRE'S sporting community is being asked to review the year and put forward those deserving special recognition.

The Herefordshire Sports Awards began back in 1989 when just one person was named Sports Personality of the Year.

However, not there are 12 awards covering a whole range of sporting achievements and your knowledge is needed.

The awards seek to recognise sporting excellence, achievement and support for community sport and they give an opportunity for individuals and teams who have reached a particular sporting milestone of success during 2018 to be nominated.

Brian White, the Honorary Secretary of Herefordshire Sport, said two of the awards also recognise those people without whom community sport would not be able to survive - that is the volunteers.

"The 'Service to Sport' award seeks to acknowledge an individual who has made a significant contribution to sport in an administrative, organisational, officiating or other supportive role," he added.

"Alongside this there is an equally important award for the 'Young Volunteer'. This is someone aged 18 or under on December 31 of this year who has voluntarily given up time and shown commitment to promote sporting opportunities for others."

Giving time to the development of sports performance is the role undertaken by coaches and the Coach of the Year award looks for those involved in coaching at any level who have sought to raise standards for an individual or a team.

Individual awards for achievement are recognised at both Senior and Junior levels. The 'Sportsman of the Year' and 'Sportswoman Of the Year' are specifically aimed at those who have had a year to remember and attained an outstanding personal pinnacle of performance. Similarly the awards for Junior Male and Junior Female Sports Achiever will be those who are making their way up the performance ladder and who took significant steps during 2018.

Disability Sport is now rightly of equal status to all sport and could be sensory, physical or cerebral and the Disabled Sports Achiever award will be made to an individual who has shown commitment and achieved success over a period of time either through taking part in sport or in a voluntary capacity.

The award for Junior Team of the Year will reward a team of players aged 18 and under from a school or sports organisation for their success during 2018 or their season culminating in 2018, and similarly for a Senior Team.

Club sport is at the heart of many communities and the Club of the Year award is made by considering the record of performance, contribution to the community, raising standards of performance, coach development and links with schools.

The foundations for sport are laid at a young age and primary schools play a vital role in this process. The Primary School of the Year PE and Sport looks at how the school has used these for the development of individual children and the school as a whole.
